theres an excellent app for this (there really is an app for everything) There are hundreds of "conversation starters". some are funny, some are silly, some are serious. I use it all the time... for instance, bfun conversation startersefore I go out to a bar or something I will try to memorize 2 or 3. Anyway, check it out.
Talk about movies you have recently seen or tell them a funny story. Also Youtube can be a great convo starter ;)
